Carol and David 'Duckman'
up
close and personal ...
As a little
girl, Carol fell in head over heels in love with Donald Duck.
"Why
not Mickey?", we asked.
Well it
seems Donald has personality, passion, and pizzazz. He gets mad,
he stamps his foot, he tells it like it is. “Actually, he’s
a lot like me,” she told us with a catch in her throat and
a twinkle in her eye.
As
Donald grew and changed over the years, so did Carol. She became
a young woman — and continued to love The Duck. Her fiancée
figured if ya can’t beat ‘em, join ‘em, and so
he learned to love The Duck too. They traveled the country, met
many friends, and received Donald items from all over the world.
Here’s a favorite, a 4-foot Pelham Puppet / marionette with
theater display case, which the Duckman ordered specially built
from England for his wife on their anniversary:

This fun-loving,
duck-collecting Disney Duo belonged to the NFFC, (National Fantasy
Fan Club), and regularly met with other members at Disney World
Conventions where they received lots of special collectible goodies
privy to members only. It was there, in the mid 80s, they won as
a door prize, an original poster-sized, signed drawing by none other
than one of the greats of animation, Alex Kuperschmidt…. and
since the character drawn was not Donald, we will auction this gem
and a few others in a couple days, so stay tuned! (Hint: The sketch
is of a rabbit who has long red hair, a very sexy rabbit indeed!)

One
of the highlights of Dave and Carol’s collecting life was
attending the public celebration of Donald’s 50th birthday
at Logan Airport in Boston, which was one of the stops on a whirlwind
criss-cross of the states on a whistle-stop birthday bash tour.

This event became a fantastic, once-in-a-lifetime
opportunity to snag the signature of Donald Duck himself! The plane
swooped in...

As the fans lined up to greet Clarence
Nash, The Voice of Donald, Dave asked Mr. Nash to autograph the
only paper item he had in his hand – the birthday cake handout
with the ingredients typed on it.

Mr. Nash
was happy to oblige, and signed it ‘Donald Duck’. Dave
was thrilled beyond belief, that is until he felt it being tugged
out of his grasp by a stern looking woman who rasped at him, “You
canNOT have that!”. He knew he wasn’t letting it go,
and he grabbed it back, telling her, “It’s mine now!”
– whereupon she turned on her heel and reminded Mr. Nash in
no uncertain terms that he was not to sign anything, and to never
do it again. This is how the menu got wrinkled, and this is why
it’s believed to be one of the last signatures of Clarence
Nash, who died a few months later.

Another happy
occurrence happened that same day, when Dave sweet-talked a badge
from one of the many media present to cover the event. Dave didn’t
relate exactly how he did it, but here you can see it for
yourself. A very nice collectible, few and far between.

And
one of Dave's very favorite items is the windup duck featured over
and over in the war movie The Dirty Dozen, a favorite of
many.

You
can see all these and more in the photos we've provided for you
in the main auction.
Though
a bit bittersweet, Carol and Dave are ready to pass the torch to
someone who loves The Duck as much as they have, and always
will.
Have
fun, and good luck bidding :)
